In 1968, North Korea's special forces infiltrated to assassinate the South Korean President. They approached about 400 meters ahead of the U.S. embassy, fought a gun battle in the mountains behind the president's residence for 4 days, with South Korea and the U.S. Special Forces. 19 out of 31 people killed, 1 surrendered and 1 fled back to North Korea. Since then, Bukhansan National Park has been closed to civilians for 50 years and has been fully open since 2018.
